With smartphones soaring in popularity over the last few years, it is interesting to take a look back and review the best models of 2009. There have been many new manufacturers, individuals and devices that have tried to claim a stake in the smartphone market, but none as popular as the following models. From the iPhone to the Palm Pre; here’s five of the best:

5. Palm Pre – Dubbed the ‘Blackberry killer’ in some quarters, the Palm Pre brought a fresh new approach to smartphones in 2009. The release of Palm Web OS placed user experience as its number one priority, and made the Palm Pre a genuinely useful and multifunctional smartphone. A bad point of the Palm Pre is the issues with its battery life, according to many users.

4. HTC Touch Pro2 – Placing the HTC Touch Pro2 behind the HTC Hero is a tough decision to make, but I feel it is just. The Touch Pro2 comes with a 3.2MP camera, qwerty keyboard and Windows Mobile OS – three features which are better accommodated for in the HTC Hero (in my opinion). The best thing about the HTC Touch Pro2 though, is the bigger resolution screen.

3. HTC Hero – Although similar to the HTC Touch Pro2, the HTC Hero has one major difference – Android OS. The two HTC phones were released at similar times, but the Hero was packed with a 5MP camera and Google Android, which puts it ahead of its manufacture competitor. The OS is smooth, sleek and contains an abundance of cool features. Other than that though, the HTC Touch Pro2 and the HTC Hero are rather similar.

2. iPhone – The top 2 smartphones in this list are predictable, some might say, but there is no denying that they are the current market leaders. The iPhone is continuing the increase in popularity that it deserves, with Apple really pushing to promote its star product in the pre-Christmas rush. Music, video, Web – the iPhone can do it all. As a ‘phone’, it may not be the best in the world (in terms of calls and texts), but it is certainly perfected one thing; applications.

1. RIM Blackberry – The iPhone may be knocking on the door, but RIM still stands strong and continues to deliver the exceptional Blackberry smartphone. Aimed at the business market preliminarily, the Blackberry delivers everything you need to take work on the go. While the iPhone focuses on providing users with a complete device, the Blackberry does limited things very well. Email and conference calls have been perfected by RIM, so much so that the Blackberry still remains the market leader in smartphone devices.

So there you have it – five smartphones that have progressed and continue to take the world by storm throughout 2009. Many models came close to making the top 5, but in terms of features, quality and popularity, it’s difficult to dismiss the above. The iPhone is set to soon become the most popular smartphone according to many reports, but for the time being the Blackberry still rules them all.

Fused Mobility is a specialist distributor of smartphones, and continues to deliver the latest Blackberry and HTC devices.

Popularity of Android based phones is showing a steady growth especially after the launch of DROID. The entry of Verizon, Sprint and other carriers across the globe in Android World is also helping the Android phones to become widely used phones.

As more and more people are purchasing the Android phones, the demand of good spy software  is also increasing. Spy softwares have long been in use over PCs by parents, security agencies, concerned spouses etc. But now mobile phone usage has taken over PC and so does the need for a good mobile spy software.

In this article we’ll try to understand the internal workings of mobistealth which is currently the most advanced android spy software.

Installation Procedure

The user is required to download mobistealth on target phone. The installation takes just few seconds and then user is required to restart the phone. When phone restart is complete, a window appears where user is required to enter user name, password and a serial number.

It appears that after this information is sent to the server, some identification number is sent by server . This identification number is then used for further communication with the server.

Logging of SMS, Call Logs, Contacts, Pictures, Videos and Web History

It is extremely important for a good android spy software to log all SMS messages even if they are deleted immediately. So the first test I carried out was to delete the SMS messages immediately after they are received/sent on phone. But to my surprise, mobistealth recorded all the deleted messages.

It appears that Mobistealth keeps an internal copy of SMS messages as soon as they are sent/received on phone.  But they are not immediately visible on server which shows that uploading of SMS message is a scheduled process. When I performed the same test with Web History , the new url was immediately logged to server.

So mobistealth uses different scheduling strategies for different types of data. Some are uploaded immediately and some after fixed intervals.

Location Information

Android Spy Software must report accurate location even if there is Cloud cover or phone is inside a room. GPS normally doesn’t work in cloud cover or inside room. Mobistealth provides location both through GPS and Cell ID (nearest tower to which phone is communicating).

It appears that their first attempt is get location through GPS and if it is not available, the location of nearest tower is obtained. They seem to have maintained a comprehensive database of mapping Cell IDs to actual geographical coordinates

Recording of Calls and Surroundings

I think these are the ultimate features of Android spy software. Mobistealth seems to be a very sophisticated piece of software as I was astonished when I heard all the communication in my room in a recording uploaded to my account. I was also able to record all the calls from selected numbers.

It appears that mobistealth has found some hack to get control of incoming/outgoing calls which enables them to record them as Android doesn’t allow any user application to take control of telephony circuitry.

Overall I think mobistealth is a comprehensive Spy Software for Android and it has really set a standard for other companies to follow in spying market.

I’ve been in domain of computers/software for around 10 years . These days Android has really caught my attention which according to me is a revolution.

I’m in need of a new PDA. I have the first HTC Tilt that came out, and it got wet and is now toast.
So… I’m back in the market. I saw that they have a new TILT 2, but I want to try something different.
I know I shouldn’t dare say this in front of the wrong people but the IPhone 3GS, is pretty appealing.
It seems to be the best multimedia machine out there. However… Is there better? I even read about the Android, and they said it was very good, but the camera sucked ***, and in the review it even said the new Iphones had a better camera.
I guess I am looking more for multimedia applications. Having Word and stuff is cool, but I’m more into “toys” than business applications.
Thanks!

The first GSM Android 2.0 handset from Motorola is expected to heat the European markets this December. It’s the Motorola Milestone QWERTY slider and has been released under a different name as the Motorola Droid in the US with just a slight difference – the US edition under Verizon won’t get multitouch capability even if both uses capacitive technology.

Another difference lies in the GPS feature. The Droid comes pre-loaded with Google Maps while the European version comes with Motorola’s own Motonav which has the same spoken turn-by-turn navigation and mapping feature. Other than these differences, both smartphones have identical hardware features.

Availability

Italy and Germany will get it first in time for Christmas and other EU countries to follow.  It’s not sure if UK markets will get it before the year is out.  The O2 Germany web site indicates a contract-free price of €481 which certainly puts it in the affordable range of flagship smartphones.

Flagship Features

Motorola is hoping to bring back its glory days as a mobile phone leader with this remarkable flagship.  It packs high end features at a price that’s definitely friendlier than many top class smartphones in the market.

This is a quad band GSM and twin-band UMTS supporting HSPA data connectivity for a fast internet browsing and downloading experience on the road.  Plus, you get WiFi 802.11b/g as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR for wireless data connectivity. This is a hefty device with real glass covering the display and a metal casing to give it 169 grams of weight.  But it is very close to the iPhone 3G size at 115.8 x 60 x 13.7mm which still makes it pocketable. Were it not for the fact that it’s a QWERTY slider, the Milestone could very be a direct rival to the iPhone. It’s got top-of-the-line imaging features from a 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera that gets flash support from the latest Android 2.0 OS (Previous versions couldn’t support one.).  Though exhibiting some shutter slowness, you do get quality VGA recording at decent frame rates.  As it is, the N97 is a better rival and easily trumps it. There’s a 256 MB internal RAM and 512 of storage for the users, plus a micro SD slot for up to 32GB of external memory. Its multimedia features start with a large 3.7” capacitive touchscreen with wide-VGA resolution that can shame the Samsung AMOLED displays on their flagship models.  To say that it is stunning is an understatement. With a 1400 mAh lithium-ion batter, you get 6.5 hours of talk time and 14 days on standby, which is fairly typical for smartphones of this size and class.

Conclusion

The Motorola Milestone/Droid smartphone will certainly be a major milestone for the company. If anything can turn around Motorola, this is it.  At a very reasonable price tag, this is one handset that combines the versatility of flagship phones like the HTC Hero with the sophistication of a Nokia N97 housed in an elegant all-metal case that feels very solid in the hands.  No other full QWERTY slider touchscreen smartphone can touch it with the value proposition it brings to the market.

With so many Motorola Milestone contracts on offer it can be hard to know which to go for. Moby1 can help by comparing all the mobile deals on offer, and they also have many phone reviews.

The Sony Ericsson Satio Silver has been the topic of discussion amongst industry experts and mobile followers alike ever since its official announcement. The best of all brands have been packed into one stand alone handset, was the view of most who reviewed it. Cyber shot series lovers as well as Walkman series affectionades can rejoice as in Satio, both these highly popular features have been consolidated and presented at once.

However, the first thing that will strike you about the gadget is its captivating looks and stylish design. Despite the sheer range of gadgetry, it is surprisingly and lightweight. Coupled with the large 3.5 inches resistive touchscreen display, it is indeed an impressive eye candy guaranteed to serve as the head turner. It operates upon the Symbian OS S60 5th edition whose earlier versions have earned a lot of flake of late owing to their slow speed as compared with windows and Android OS. However, Satio elegantly gets past such a scenario with the much improved upgrade offering easier navigation. The touch resistive screen means all that one needs to do is to tap on the icons in order to work with them. It supports handwriting recognition and users can also work while putting on gloves.

Messaging has been given an altogether new look in the Sony Ericsson Satio Silver. The exciting colour variant enables you to work with SMS, MMS, IM, add personal webmail account, corporate webmail account etc. In terms of Internet support also the gadget does much more than providing basic features. A full HTML support along with 3G and Wi-Fi support results in some lightening fast speed for browsing as well as downloading. However, the crowning achievement of this handset is indeed its sophisticated camera functionality. A look at all of the available features convinces you to let go of that digital camera of yours for good. With a 12 MP camera, Touch focus, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, BestPic etc., even novice photographers are sure to capture some darn good photos. Video recording is not to be left behind either, as the gadget enables you to shoot at 30 frames per second. LED flash feature adds to the repository for recording those late night vids.

A comprehensive and even generous application suite provides even more variety. This includes Facebook, Youtube, MySpace, etc. along with Worldmate, Labybrinth, and MyLook. Google maps is always handy when on the road, and so is Bluetooth and USB v2.0 support. Upto 32 GB of expandable memory support ensures there is always room for more. Entertain yourself with the Stereo FM radio with RDS support. The sophisticated media player plays a variety of audio codes like MP3/WMA/WAV/RA/AAC/M4A. The Battery life is competitive which will obviously depends upon the usage. If you are really into listening radios all day long, playing vids, accessing the Internet then be prepared to recharge the battery after 5 hrs. A milder usage would yield upto 11 hours of talk time.

Alden Jerry is an author of various electronics and mobile phones products, gadgets and Mobile Phone Deals like Sony Ericsson Mobile Phones
