Recently released in the UK, the HTC Magic is the next vehicle for the Google Android OS… but how well does it stack up against its rivals? How long can it reign supreme before something knocks it off its perch?

HTC Magic – the basics

The first important fact about the HTC Magic, and the bit that has made it so talked about, is its operating system: Google Android. As it’s only the second phone to officially go on sale using Android, the HTC Magic has garnered an awful lot of trade and consumer interest. Even more importantly, the HTC Magic is the first Android phone to feature a keyboard-less, touchscreen-only design, a thing that seems to be all the rage in 2009. It’s certainly more of a looker than its predecessor, the G1, and that fusion of enhanced looks and the still-awesome power of Android makes the HTC Magic a very compelling phone indeed.

Nokia N97 – Symbian the true challenger to Android?

However, Android isn’t the only touch-based operating system out there, and Symbian is one of the heavyweights in the mobile world. That’s sure to give the Nokia N97, the next phone with Symbian Touch, some serious clout when it arrives. The Nokia N97, to be frank, easily outdoes the HTC Magic in terms of hardware features, with a 5 megapixel camera, and 32Gb of memory built in; simply, the Nokia N97 dwarfs the 3MP and memory-card-only storage of the HTC Magic. The big thing, though, that will settle this debate is the interface, and in that arena, the Nokia N97 isn’t such a b contender. It uses Symbian Touch, but not the fully open source version that’s coming later in the year, and it remains to be seen how good the Ovi Store will be on the Nokia N97. Given how good the Android Marketplace, with its selection of downloadable apps is, it’s going to be difficult for the Nokia N97 to top it.

Palm Pre – war of the interfaces

If the interface on the Nokia N97 can’t beat the Android powered HTC Magic, what can? Well, there’s one phone whose interface tops everything on the market today: the Palm Pre. It features the slickest interface ever witnessed on a phone, with sleek transitions and touch controls, not to mention the tightest integration between apps that’s ever been experienced. The WebOS interface that powers the Palm Pre really is a thing of beauty, and as its hardware specs are at least on a par with the HTC Magic, it seems a foregone conclusion that it’s going to be the winner in this fight, yes? Well, that depends. The Palm Pre is very much a make or break product for Palm, and if things don’t quite go according to plan, they maybe in some insurmountable financial trouble. Add in to that the fact that there’s no news yet of a UK release for the Palm Pre (with some commentators starting to get the feeling if it doesn’t perform well in the USA, the Palm Pre will never get released in the UK), and it means that as things stand at the moment, the future for the Palm Pre just isn’t looking as rosy as the HTC Magic…

It looks like a cross between the Apple iPhone and just about every large screen smartphone out there.  Even the spec list reads just like any high end smartphone.  But you just have to spend a few minutes with the HTC Hero to realize you have a winner that can sweep the competition away in this class of smartphones.

Some user impressions

First off, the slim form is at once an enticing feature of this phone, making it stand out among the crop of smartphones in its class. But for a mobile device without a physical keyboard, the Hero is a bit thick when compared against its HTC Magic, Nokia N97, and iPhone 3G counterparts, but just minimally. It uses beveled edges at the back with a Teflon coat  making the handset a nice fit and feel solid in your hand The HTC Sense UI (User interface) is a compelling feature that gets a big boost with iPhone-like capacitive touchscreen.  This proprietary feature promises a more human-centric approach to managing  phone data – though sharing much with the TouchFLO features. The on-screen keyboard is quite useable with a really impressive simulated haptics-based feedback bounce when striking each key in either portrait or landscape mode (which gets activated by tilting the phone accordingly). Designed from the ground up, this HTC-built touch keyboard offers the most responsive touchscreen typing experience in its class. It suffers no lag and offers useful visual cues for auto-correction. and has great colorful visual cues for its auto-corrected words The feature list is among the best for smartphones such as Qualcomm’s MSM7200A that runs at 528MHz using the Android OS 512MB/288MB ROM/RAM 320 x 480 resolution using a 3.2-inch TFT-LCD capacitive touch screen Quad-Band GSM and 900/2100MHz HSPA Uses trackball Includes internal Global Positioning System Support for Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and  EDR functionality 802.11b/g WiFi. 5 mega pixel camera with auto-focus External memory expansion slot support for microSD Gravity sensor or accelerometer Industry-standard 3.5mm audio jack Hero’s built-in camera is, for the most part, an acknowledgement of what the competition has and that camera phones are here to stay.  Nothing spectacular about it, responsive, yes, and certainly does a respectable job with its auto focus capability. Battery life is typical of feature-rich mobile phones.  For heavy users, HTC promises the Hero to last through a day’s work.  Rather vague as a day’s work can be just 8 hours or 24 hours.

I was hesitant about purchasing this smart phone because I was never a fan of Blackberry’s (RIMM). I had a BB during their initial boom in the early part of the new millennium. However, the poor browser, poor cell phone network, lackluster screen color, non desirable keyboard, awful battery life, whack OS, & lack of T9 predictive text just couldn’t win me over.

After I realized that I couldn’t text on a touch screen phone, unless it was the iPhone. I decided that I must have a cell phone device with an actual qwerty keyboard, if I expect to survive my text message & email addiction.

I picked up the Blackberry 9700 with my corporate discount and walked away with a nice high end phone at a very reasonable price. I have to say that I really enjoy the web browser on the new BB. You can zoom in & out with ease. I thought no browser could compare to the iPod Safari besides the Android G1, but after getting this device – I can safely say that this browser is also one of the best. Its right behind the safari and G1. Prior models were confined to small screens, thirty-five dollar internet only data plans, and no ability to zoom in or out. You were subjected to a small screen and reading small text till your eyes was squinting like grandmas.

Non RIMM Consumer Changes Mind!

For anyone who has wanted a BB but held off on getting one and want an entry level Blackberry at a decent price – this is the model to get. Everything about it is an upgrade. The device is basically the BB Bold with a different casing. The battery life could still use some more juice. With excessive email checking & non stop texting, the phone usually needs a charge after a day and a half of usage (Sometimes i can go a charge for 2 days before a charge so thats not bad). I did set the brightness of the phone to the lowest brightness available and it has lasted for a little over 2 days with no charge needed. Even on the lowest brightness, the screen is still very bright, sharp, & crisp. And i still do unlimited texting & web browsing. However, AT&T doesn’t offer the best mobile minute plans on earth & their data plan is probably one of themost expensive around. They are fully aware that their signal is one of the best & in doing so, make up for it by charging their non-friendly services at non-friendly prices, which usually doesn’t offers an abundant amount of minutes, unlimited data, internet, email, text etc will end up costing you a lot!

I pay under seventy bucks a month for a decent amount of mins & unlimited everything else. My friend has a similar plan on Verizon, its not unlimited, and her bill is always over a hundred each month.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 Phone

The new LG GW620 is the newest offer from LG that will, for the very first time, feature the Android operating system. This release only comes a week after the announcement by the third largest mobile phone manufacturer that they will be releasing 3 new mobile phones that will be running Windows Mobile. These efforts seem to be paving the way for LG to expand the smartphone market and make it a lot more accessible to everyone. With this newest release, LG is honoring its commitment to bringing consumers better choices and experiences.

The Design

In terms of the design, this mobile phone does not necessarily stand out. That is to say, it comes in a very basic style that is both fashionable and modern (although it is not at the same level of the Nokia N series or Blackberry community). It also features a 3.0-inch resistive touchscreen that has a 320 x 480 pixel resolution (262K colors). This is also a slider phone, which means it slides out (landscape) to reveal a full QWERTY keypad that can facilitate faster typing. This is good news for all the young people and professionals in the crowd because a full QWERTY keypad makes drafting emails, instant messages, and SMS very simple and very convenient. It also features an accelerometer, which is very responsive.

All in all, the design is okay. It will not necessarily put people in a state of awe but it won’t leave them bored either. It is the perfect mix of simplicity and style that should appeal to a significant amount of people out there.

The Features

As for the features, this Android phone is packed full of them. First of, this will be running on the Android platform, which should mean that it will have access to a lot of the different Google Services being offered. These include Google Maps, Gmail, Google Search, and others. It should also come with access to the Android Market, where people can download a multitude of applications to populate their phones with.

Apart from this, it also comes with a 5.0-megapixel camera with an autofocus feature, video capture capabilities, and the ability to take photos of up to 2560 x 1920 pixels in resolution. It also features SMS/MMS capabilities, space for over 1000 contacts (with photocall), a microSD slot, 2.0 microUSB, Bluetooth connectivity, email support, a WAP browser, instant messaging capabilities, as well as an FM radio and photo and video editors. It is also java enabled, supports GPS with A-GPS, has an audio / video player, and all the other basic features typical of any new smartphone.

The Verdict

All in all, the LG GW620 is not necessarily the best smartphone out there. It will not have the same amount of functionality that HTC handsets, or other high-level smartphones will feature, but on its own, it is a very good Android offer that will surely expand the reach of LG. If you are in the market for a new smartphone, give this slider phone a try and you will be pleasantly surprised by its functionality and style.
