With smartphones soaring in popularity over the last few years, it is interesting to take a look back and review the best models of 2009. There have been many new manufacturers, individuals and devices that have tried to claim a stake in the smartphone market, but none as popular as the following models. From the iPhone to the Palm Pre; here’s five of the best:
5. Palm Pre – Dubbed the ‘Blackberry killer’ in some quarters, the Palm Pre brought a fresh new approach to smartphones in 2009. The release of Palm Web OS placed user experience as its number one priority, and made the Palm Pre a genuinely useful and multifunctional smartphone. A bad point of the Palm Pre is the issues with its battery life, according to many users.
4. HTC Touch Pro2 – Placing the HTC Touch Pro2 behind the HTC Hero is a tough decision to make, but I feel it is just. The Touch Pro2 comes with a 3.2MP camera, qwerty keyboard and Windows Mobile OS – three features which are better accommodated for in the HTC Hero (in my opinion). The best thing about the HTC Touch Pro2 though, is the bigger resolution screen.
3. HTC Hero – Although similar to the HTC Touch Pro2, the HTC Hero has one major difference – Android OS. The two HTC phones were released at similar times, but the Hero was packed with a 5MP camera and Google Android, which puts it ahead of its manufacture competitor. The OS is smooth, sleek and contains an abundance of cool features. Other than that though, the HTC Touch Pro2 and the HTC Hero are rather similar.
2. iPhone – The top 2 smartphones in this list are predictable, some might say, but there is no denying that they are the current market leaders. The iPhone is continuing the increase in popularity that it deserves, with Apple really pushing to promote its star product in the pre-Christmas rush. Music, video, Web – the iPhone can do it all. As a ‘phone’, it may not be the best in the world (in terms of calls and texts), but it is certainly perfected one thing; applications.
1. RIM Blackberry – The iPhone may be knocking on the door, but RIM still stands strong and continues to deliver the exceptional Blackberry smartphone. Aimed at the business market preliminarily, the Blackberry delivers everything you need to take work on the go. While the iPhone focuses on providing users with a complete device, the Blackberry does limited things very well. Email and conference calls have been perfected by RIM, so much so that the Blackberry still remains the market leader in smartphone devices.
So there you have it – five smartphones that have progressed and continue to take the world by storm throughout 2009. Many models came close to making the top 5, but in terms of features, quality and popularity, it’s difficult to dismiss the above. The iPhone is set to soon become the most popular smartphone according to many reports, but for the time being the Blackberry still rules them all.
Today, Smartphones have become the daily necessity for corporate users and next generation. They are not only revolutionizing the mobile phone industry, but also changing the way we use computers. It is reported that Smartphone sales are expected to rise 22% in 2009. However, due to global recession, the demand for the mobile handsets will see a slump of 21% in 2009, according to a research firm.
Majority of telecom vendors like Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson had been either suffering from sharp losses or fighting hard to stay profitable. But, why Smartphones are not suffering in the recession? The multimedia factor and wide variety of entertainment that Smartphones offer are the basic reasons for their popularity. The other reasons for the success of Smartphones in the market are:
Information on the move
Smartphones can help you stay better organized and track information on the move. With various Smartphone’s apps, you can check and search for information like budgets, project hours, FedEx shipments, password data, and even taxicabs. Users can check and push their e-mails on the devices.
Using various social networking sites is easier than before due to options of QWERTY keyboards or resistive touchscreen in the devices. It is reported that about 18.3 million Smartphone users had accessed social networking services from their handsets in July 2009, according to analytics firm Nielsen.

After the introduction of Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5, Google’s Android, Palm’s WebOS, Nokia’s Symbian and Maemo 5 platform, and the latest Samsung ‘bada’ operating system, the horizon of utility and features of these devices have been increased significantly. Experts are calling the devices as mini computers that provide similar functions and predict that Smartphones will be the most important computing appliance for employees going forward by surpassing laptops.
Expensive sells
These devices are feature-rich mobile handsets running on mobile operating systems. They will perform functions similar to PCs and therefore expensive. However, market economists suggest that in the recent downturn, middle market suffers the most; therefore, the Smartphone sales remain unaffected. But, they are getting cheaper as Apple decreases the price of its iPhone 3G and Blackberry Curve is available for about 15K. You can purchase a Smartphone for $200 or less.
Further, Smartphones like Apple’s iPhone, Blackberry devices and Palm latest releases have been showing positive growth in the period. Microsoft, the software giant had also predicted that in the upcoming years, the Smartphones will hold the 30% share of the total market and half of the value of the mobile phone market.
Smartphone’s future
Various analysts predict that the Smartphone can deliver BI at a low cost in future. However, using such devices to review and administer the business intelligence data is still in development, but expected to grow in future. BI analysts suggest that due to growth in user-friendly BI applications and its real time utility will create demand for mobile BI. Mobile BI will be less complex and will help in the cost cutting to various types of ndustry like marketing and transport sector.

The year that went past may remind many things for many people. But for technology buffs and gizmo freaks it was certainly the year of smartphones. Those who take pride in being the first few to lay hands on and use fancy new phones, had many a busy days in 2008 with a slew of smartphones that were launched amidst much fanfare.
It all started in the last week of June 2008 when Apple launched its much hyped and anticipated iPhone 3G. The long queues outside the stores selling the iPhone, reams of newsprint, the amount of airtime on television channels and the thousands of dedicated web pages and blog posts for the iPhone were ample proof to show the level of expectation for the gadget. And the gizmo largely lived up to the expectation. Economic slowdown or not, the iPhone ensured that it brought in enough moolah for Apple. The iPhone 3G was followed by a slew of smartphones launched to cash in on the smartphone fever. The HTC came out with its first touch screen phone the HTC Touch Diamond, which was greeted with quite a warm response. For RIM, makers of the Blackberry smartphones, it was a double shot as they launched two new models, the Blackberry Bold and the first touch screen Blackberry Storm
. It’s not just the hardware but also the software that maketh a phone. That was the message from Google as it launched its first open source mobile software Android through the HTC G1 phone. Now many other cell phone makers and carriers have shown interest in using the Android software.
It’s not just sufficient to have the best cell phones and smartphones. An efficient service provider and good cell phone rate plans that suits our need are also essentials to ensure that the phones serve the intended purpose. Cell service comparison is essential to ensure that it’s not just the phone but also the user who is smart.
I love to write
HTC is an abbreviation for High Tech Computer Corporation and represents one of the best performing companies from the mobile sector from Asia, more exactly from Taiwan.
The company is widely know as a mobile producer that uses both “Microsoft Windows Mobile” and “Android” operating systems on their phones.
The growth of the company in the last years – 2006, 2007, 2008 was quite impressive and lead to world wide recognition and a strong brand positioning on the phone market.
It is also important to mention that HTC helped with the creation of T-Mobile G1 Android phone, by manufacturing the phone’s hardware.
On the smartphone market, HTC has introduced 2 major series: S series – smart phones and T series – touch phones; the company also manufactures Android phones (A series), PDA phones (P series) and Mobile computers (X series).
A phone can have different names as it is rebranded by different telecommunication carriers and the only way to know if a HTC phone sold by Orange is the same as the one sold by Vodafone is by looking at its series.
The newest smartphones realest by HTC are S 740 – which appeared in September, 2008 and T Diamond 2 – which appeared in 2009.
So how smart are they, in comparison to their competitors – iPhone, G1 and Blackberry ?
First of all, S740 has a slide out, 4 row keyboard and doesn’t own a touchscreen; a 3.2 MP color camera that benefits from autofocus, a Bluetooth and WI – FI connections, a built in FM radio and a 256 MB of memory. Moreover, it supports the audio formats: AAC, AAC+, MP3, WMA, WAV, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, but does not support video formats and can be used as a GPS. The operating system used is “Windows Mobile Standard” which confers a faster time response. A major draw back is the display that has only 2.4 inch. As design, the S740 is quite stylish and quite different from other phones having only 116.3 mm x 43.4 mm x 16.6 mm in dimensions and a diamond back borrowed from HTC Touch Diamond.
On the other hand, the Touch Diamond 2 has a 3.2 inch touch sensitive display (just a little bit smaller than iPhone’s 3.5 inch display), a memory of 288 RAM and a main 5.0 MP camera (the largest among its competitors) with autofocus and a secondary color camera. Even more, the Touch Diamond can also be used as a GPS, supports video and audio formats and uses “Windows Mobile Professional” as an operating system.
All these put together, show us major differences between the S and T series, and also the fact that Touch Diamond 2 can be regarded as a tough competition on the smartphone market.
So – How smart are they? I will say “pretty smart” and also quite “good looking”.
I am a technical editor for http://www.tuvabox.com with vivid interests in gadgets, music and traveling.
